A spoonful of poison metrics

Medicine for creatives who’ve been crushed by the algorithm.

“Algorithms bite artists harder than others for two reasons. First we are so emotionally connected to our creations that our work tends to be inseparable from our identity. When our art flops we take it personally. Second, if our art is original, and that’s the ultimate goal, an algorithm won’t know what to do with it. Because that’s what algorithms do, they categorize you based on similarities to things it has already measured. If you break the mold, you are practically invisible to an algorithm. As a result, unconventional creators (artists) are going to be hurt worse and more often than trend chasers.”
